A committee of 15 historians in Washington, DC have decided unanimously to accept the Montauk Lighthouse in New York as a National Historic Landmark. This designation means it is considered a structure not only of regional importance, but also of great significance to the US as a whole. Nominations for the lighthouse were twice rejected before, but but more research finally convinced the historians of it's national significance.
The key to its importance is the pivotal role that the Montauk Lighthouse played in pre and post-Revolutionary War trade between New York and England, with a volume of imports and exports far greater than was realized in modern times. The evidence was found in the archives of the New York City Chamber of Commerce dating back to 1792. This is the year the lighthouse was built in the interest of protecting the trade ships that sailed back and forth between the US and England.
